Defining the problem

What is difficult about reading photographic images?

When one tries to read (i.e. to understand) photographs, the problem is (at least) threefold. Photographic images are difficult to read because:

  1. They are images.
  2. They are photographic images.
  3. Our word-dominated education does not offer a good training in “visual literacy”.
